Variants are the different versions of a product you sell, like sizes, colors, or materials, and over the years Shopify has expanded what they can do. A single product now supports up to 2,048 variants. Variants can be published to specific channels and catalogs. And most recently, multiple barcodes are supported at the variant level. As your business grows, managing all of that should stay simple, no matter how many variants a product has.
That's why we've redesigned how variants work as part of our broader admin refresh. You can now manage variants directly on the product detail page, which means:
-
No more switching between pages. Edit your variants while the rest of your product details stays in view, so you don't lose your place or product context.
-
Less waiting while you edit. Move from one variant to the next without waiting for a new page to load each time you make a change.
-
Faster updates. Editing is faster, even when you're updating dozens or hundreds of variants together. For example, bulk updates to variant pricing now take two clicks instead of five.
The rollout to all merchants begins in December 2026. We'll walk through the changes so you know what to expect when it shows up in your admin.
Product page updates
Before adding variants, you'll see a few changes to the product page itself.
-
Build more complete listings. The page now guides you to fill out the most important identifying details first like media gallery, title, and description. These details define how your product appears across channels and AI agents. Complete details help buyers get accurate product information wherever they find you.
-
Keep key details in view. Important product details such as category, status, and publishing controls sit in a side panel that stays with you as you scroll.
-
Expand or collapse sections as you work. Sections like the media gallery and metafields open up when you're filling in details. Close these sections when you want to focus on the rest of the page.
-
High priority fields in the same section. Price, inventory, and shipping are now grouped together, because every product needs them. This section also has two new features:
-
Add up to 20 barcodes to a product and its variants.
-
Save package dimensions, and when an order includes several items, Shopify figures out which of your saved packages they'll all fit in.

Flexible ways to work with all your variants at once
Set up and organize your variants
Create your variants by adding an option, like size and color. You can select options that Shopify suggests based on your product’s category or add your own. As you add options, your variants are listed in the left pane. You now have the same familiar detail view for your variants so you can quickly manage your key details per variant like price, availability, and shipping.

Reordering of options and how it impacts the views on the left.
You can also search, filter, group, and reorder variants in the left pane.
Bulk edit your selected variants
Once you've set up your view, you can select multiple variants and edit key fields in bulk. Any change you make applies to every variant you've selected.

Choose the view that fits the task
You can switch between two views: Detail view shows all the fields for one variant, great for managing variants individually while the table view helps in making quick, high-level changes across variant groups. You can bulk edit in both views.
Same features, now designed to scale with your products
These updates are designed to make it easier to manage your products and variants, especially as your catalog grows. All the product features you already use are still available on the updated page, including first and third party app integrations, and multi-location inventory management.
Help docs are updated where you can learn more about variants. As always, if you can't find something on the new page, ask Sidekick for personalized help.
