Commerce moves fast. Shopify moves faster.

Requiring shoppers to sign in can interrupt a purchase just before payment. Guest checkout sends them directly to the contact, delivery, and payment fields. Guest checkout reduces friction, but the goal isn't to eliminate customer accounts; it's to give shoppers a checkout experience that best fits how they want to buy.

Extra steps make checkout harder to finish. Baymard Institute’s research found that 17% of US online shoppers had abandoned an order in the previous three months because checkout was too long or complicated. Guest checkout cuts the time needed to place an order.

This guide covers how guest checkout works, its benefits and drawbacks, best practices, and how to implement it effectively.

What is a guest checkout?

A guest checkout is an online checkout option that does not require a customer account. The customer enters the details needed for that order but does not create a username or password.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The shopper adds items to their cart.
  2. They choose guest checkout.
  3. They enter their delivery and payment details.
  4. They review the order and pay.
  5. The store sends an order confirmation.

The store still records the order and keeps the customer information needed to process it. Guest checkout gives shoppers a direct path to purchase without removing account checkout as an option.

Guest checkout versus account checkout

Account-based checkout asks shoppers to sign in before they pay. Their account stores saved details and order history for future visits. Businesses can use that activity to personalize promotions and product recommendations.

Guest and account checkout solve different needs: guest checkout removes the need for account setup, while account checkout can reduce repeated data entry for returning shoppers.

Comparison Guest checkout Account checkout
Account Not required Required
First purchase No account setup Setup or sign-in required
Future purchases Details entered again Saved details can autofill
Order history Accessed through order links Available after sign-in

On Shopify, customer accounts reuse a signed-in customer’s contact information at checkout. Shop Pay also saves payment and delivery details for faster future purchases. For returning shoppers, that can reduce the need to enter the same information again.

Princess Polly tested Shop Pay’s authenticated checkout for four weeks. Shop Pay recognized returning users and filled in their saved details. The brand recorded a 4.1% conversion increase among buyers with an existing Shop Pay session and a 7.6% drop in median checkout time across the store.

Benefits and drawbacks of guest checkout

Guest checkout can improve the buying experience for many shoppers, but it also comes with trade-offs businesses should understand.

Benefits of guest checkout

A 2025 IDC survey of 8,000 shoppers across eight European countries found:

  • Customer demand: 75% of shoppers listed guest checkout as a priority when choosing where to buy.
  • Fewer steps: 68% had abandoned a cart because checkout involved too many steps. Guest checkout removes account sign-up.
  • Less account data: 64% had abandoned a cart because a site collected too much information. Guest checkout removes the need for entering personal information into a more permanent account registration.

Drawbacks of guest checkout

Guest checkout can create some operational and customer-experience trade-offs, but most are manageable with the right checkout design and systems.

  • Repeat data entry: Returning shoppers may need to type their details again. Browser autofill or accelerated checkout can shorten this process.
  • No account dashboard: Guest shoppers may need confirmation links to track separate orders. Creating an account gives them one place to view purchases.
  • Split customer records: A store may not connect two guest orders when the shopper uses different email addresses.
  • Limited cart recovery: A store needs the shopper’s email before it can send an abandoned checkout reminder.

The store still receives the information needed to process each guest order. Shopify stores can add a marketing opt-in at checkout, which gives guest shoppers the choice to receive future emails.

Guest checkout doesn't eliminate customer data, but it can make repeat customers harder to identify.

Four best practices for guest checkout

Use these four practices to reduce checkout friction while preserving security and opportunities to build customer relationships:

  1. Offer guest checkout as an option.
  2. Communicate the benefits of each checkout option.
  3. Keep the guest checkout form short.
  4. Balance security controls with checkout speed.

1. Offer guest checkout as an option

Place guest checkout and sign-in options together at the beginning of checkout. Use simple labels such as Continue as guest and Sign in. Give both choices equal visibility on desktop and mobile checkout.

Lifestyle goods brand Ban.do uses their standard checkout form as the guest option. Shoppers enter an email address and delivery details right away.

Returning customers can select the Sign in link beside the Contact heading. Shop Pay, PayPal, and Google Pay appear above the form for shoppers who prefer express checkout.

Ban.do lets guests enter contact and delivery details immediately, with sign-in available for returning customers.

2. Communicate the benefits of each checkout option

Explain what each path offers. Guest checkout skips account setup. Signing in can fill saved details and place past orders in one account.

Offer payment methods shoppers already recognize. Shopify stores can add Shop Pay, which saves payment and delivery details for faster future purchases.

An external study by a Big Three global management consulting company found that Shop Pay lifts conversions by up to 50% relative to guest checkout and outpaces other accelerated checkouts by at least 10%.

Make account creation optional before payment. Invite customers to create an account after checkout for quicker reordering or easier returns. At that point, the benefits are clearer.

3. Keep the guest checkout form short

Baymard’s “Checkout UX Guide” found that the average checkout has 19.9 form elements. An optimized flow can use as few as 12. Baymard’s 2025 research also found that optional fields increased the time spent on a checkout step by 5% to 30%.

Review every field and keep only those needed to process and deliver the order:

  • Hide uncommon fields behind a link.
  • Label each field in plain language.
  • Use address autofill and inline error messages.
  • Preserve entered details when an error occurs.
  • Show delivery charges and tax before payment.
  • Test the full checkout page on mobile.

4. Balance security controls with checkout speed

Security controls need to protect payment data without adding unnecessary friction for routine purchases. Juniper Research forecast that the value of fraudulent ecommerce transactions will rise from $56 billion in 2025 to $131 billion by 2030.

Baymard’s 2025 data also found that 19% of shoppers who abandoned for a reason other than browsing left because they did not trust the site with their credit card information.

Route orders with high-risk signals for extra verification. Keep the standard flow for routine purchases. Use these controls:

  • PCI DSS: Use a validated payment provider and review the PCI DSS v4.0.1 requirements for your setup. Shopify’s Level 1 PCI DSS compliance applies to every store on the platform.
  • TLS: Use TLS 1.2 or higher throughout checkout. Shopify uses TLS 1.2 and higher for storefront and admin connections.
  • Tokenization: Choose a provider that replaces card numbers with payment tokens. Raw card data stays out of your store’s systems.
  • Fraud checks: Use CVV and address checks. Add device and velocity signals. Send high-risk payments through 3D Secure or manual review.
  • Trust signals: Keep checkout on a consistent HTTPS domain. Show accepted payment methods before payment. Place return, privacy, and contact links nearby.

How to enable guest checkout in three steps

If you've decided guest checkout is right for your business, the next step is enabling it and measuring its impact. Follow these three steps to enable guest checkout on your store:

  1. Measure the impact on checkout performance.
  2. Choose the right technology solution.
  3. Design a clear guest checkout flow.

1. Measure the impact on checkout performance

Record a baseline before launch so you can separate the effect of guest checkout from normal changes in traffic and demand. A three-month average gives smaller stores a comparison.

Enterprise teams can use an A/B test or matched control period to account for promotions, seasonal demand, and changes in traffic.

Track these common checkout metrics:

  • Checkout completion rate: The percentage of checkout sessions that end in an order
  • Average order value (AOV): The average amount spent per order
  • Payment authorization rate: The percentage of payment attempts approved
  • Fraud and chargeback rate: The share of orders lost to fraud or payment disputes
  • Repeat purchase rate: The percentage of guest shoppers who place another order
  • Post-purchase sign-in rate: The percentage who access their customer account after ordering

Break the results out by device, market, payment method, and customer type. A higher overall conversion rate can hide a slower mobile checkout or more payment declines in one market.

Shopify’s behavior reports track sessions that reached checkout, sessions that completed checkout, and checkout conversion rate over time.

2. Choose the right technology solution

Shopify supports guest checkout through its checkout settings. To keep guest checkout available, leave Require customers to sign in to their account before checkout turned off.

  • Choose Email or Phone number or email as the contact method. Then decide whether fields such as company name, address line 2, and shipping phone number should appear.

Turning mandatory sign-in on removes accelerated checkout buttons such as Apple Pay from the online store cart in Shopify Checkout.

Shopify Checkout runs the checkout experience for Shopify stores. Evaluate its mobile speed, the checkout extensions included in your plan, and the reports available for measuring completion.

Confirm what the platform lets your team change before approving the checkout design. Shopify’s checkout customization options vary by plan and location.

Shopify stores on Basic plans and higher can add UI extensions to the thank-you and order-status pages. Extensions for the information, shipping, and payment pages are available on the Shopify Plus plan.

3. Design a clear guest checkout flow

Baymard’s 2025 checkout benchmark found that 62% of ecommerce sites failed to make guest checkout the most prominent option.

Design guest checkout and signed-in checkout as one flow. Give Continue as guest the primary button. Keep Sign in close by and explain that saved contact and delivery details reduce data entry on later purchases. This lets shoppers choose the path that best fits whether they’re making a first-time purchase or returning with saved information.

Invite guests to create an account on the confirmation page. At that point the order is already complete, and most of the customer information has been entered. Leave it optional, but give shoppers a reason to accept, such as faster reordering or easier returns.

Guest checkout FAQ

Is guest checkout a good idea?

Yes. Guest checkout gives first-time and occasional buyers a direct path to payment. Baymard’s 2025 research found that 18% of shoppers abandoned an order because they did not want to create an account. Keep sign-in available for returning customers, then measure checkout completion and repeat purchases after launch.

Is guest checkout safe?

Yes. Guest checkout can use the same payment protections as account checkout. A secure setup includes TLS encryption, PCI DSS–compliant payment processing, tokenization, and fraud screening. Shopify encrypts all store connections with TLS 1.2 or higher, and its checkout meets PCI DSS v4 requirements.

What customer data is available after guest checkout?

After a guest checkout, the store can access the data attached to the order, including the customer’s name, contact details, addresses, purchased items, order value, and fulfillment status. The shopper has no account login, but Shopify still creates a customer profile when an order is placed. Promotional marketing use depends on consent and applicable law.

Are there any risks associated with guest checkout?

Yes. Guest checkout can make it harder to connect repeat orders and recover abandoned checkouts. Businesses still receive the data needed to process each order, but guest activity may be harder to connect across purchases.

Should a store ask shoppers to create an account after guest checkout?

Yes. Invite shoppers to create an account after checkout, when the purchase is complete and the benefits are clearer. Explain the value, such as faster reordering, easier returns, or access to past orders.
